By late 1993, the Medellín Cartel had become one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world, threatening Colombia's sovereignty through drug trafficking, corruption, bombings, assassinations, and intimidation of public officials and civilians. Following Pablo Escobar's escape from La Catedral prison, Colombian authorities, supported by international intelligence and security assistance, launched an extensive operation to locate and capture the cartel leader. Delegates will address the challenges of dismantling the Medellín Cartel, coordinating intelligence and military operations, protecting civilians, combating corruption, disrupting international narcotics networks, and determining the role of foreign assistance while respecting Colombia's sovereignty.
